A Fun Way To Spend Sunday Afternoon
We lead such busy lives these days that we get to spend far too little time with our children. During the week, we're at work and they are at school. We spend Saturdays catching up on chores around the house while the kids catch up with their friends. That gives us only Sunday to spend together.
Many families make a point of making Sunday the family day. Everybody usually sleeps in and then gets together for a nice big Sunday breakfast or brunch. Finally, we might all go out and do something together. Sunday afternoon comes all too quickly.
A great way to finish Sunday on a high note is to bake a cake. The children always love to join in on the fun and there's excitement in the air as they anticipate the reward at dessert time. It's even more fun if you turn it into a game.
Start by letting them choose the shape of the cake you're going to bake that day. It's a good bet that the boys will choose your biggest square cake pans.
Girls, on the other hand, will lean towards the heart cake pan. This choice could lead to some serious complaints from the boys, so you will have to moderate the decision. A good compromise might be the round cake pan or you can flip a coin. The loser can have the pan of their choice next weekend.
Wood bar stools are the perfect height for youngsters working in the kitchen. Sit them down and put them to work adding the ingredients and mixing the batter. When they're done, help them pour it into the cake pan. Put it in the oven and then you can all get started on the icing.
You will have to supervise this closely if you want there to be any icing left for the cake! In fact, it's a good idea to make extra icing, so they can taste test their creation.
They might not be overjoyed about washing up time, but if you don't mind them making a little bit of a mess while they're cleaning, it can be fun, too. You will just need to tidy up a little after them.
While the cake cools, the kids can relax in front of the TV. When it comes time for icing the cake, they will definitely want to join in the fun.
Finally, when time for dessert comes around, the whole family can eat the delicious cake the kids made 'all by themselves.' With a little luck, you'll be able to salvage a couple of slices for their Monday lunch pails. What a great way to finish the weekend!
