Although their minds are set on girls on a Saturday night, the last thing most guys are thinking about is marriage. This is just a warning, guys. Girls don't think the same as you do.

It's not altogether accurate to make blanket statements about human behavior, but in many ways we're all alike. Men in general don't think in terms of relationships, they think in terms of having sex. The relationship part of the equation doesn't enter until they're hopelessly in love. Ask any group of men if they have ever thought about solitaire engagement rings and they will just laugh.

Take a poll of women, though, and ask them if they have ever found themselves dreaming about princess cut engagement rings and you would get a lot of positive responses. Women think about engagement and marriage; men do not.

Nature must be very clever to have found a way to make men make a commitment to women. As if by magic, what started out as a simple affair turns into a full blown love affair. Suddenly a man is willing to throw away his freedom just to be with one woman. Some people even think falling in love is a form of insanity, but without it, life probably wouldn't work.

There are no doubt biological imperatives in the whole process of mating. Before the age of birth control, if a woman had sex, she was in danger of getting pregnant. As a result, women were never as promiscuous as men. It was too dangerous. Therefore, women always put the commitment of marriage high on their list of priorities. While birth control has allowed women more freedom, it hasn't changed their more basic need for security in a mate.

The mystery is why men don't just take off when women get pregnant, but they don't – at least not often. Even if you ignore the social taboos, men feel a gut sense that the baby is theirs as well and that they have to take care of it, even though a baby was the last thing on his mind when he was having sex.

Squeeze all the pleasure out of your Saturday nights as you can, guys. You're engaging in a mating ritual that is as old as time itself. While you're standing in front of the mirror checking your new shirt out, the girls will be taking off their baggy girls sweatshirts and exchanging them for their sexiest outfits. You'll meet at the bar or the club and dance and flirt the night away. With a little luck, you'll get what your hormones were looking for.

You will get away with it for awhile, so enjoy it while it lasts. One day, though, you will find yourself changing diapers on a Saturday night and feeling happy for the privilege. That seems to just be the way nature works, so don't fight it.
