Traditionally, it used to be that people didn't pay much mind to stalking behavior simply because they figured it was just a strange thing to do.
It was not viewed as being aberrant behavior, but mostly shrugged off as being "off the wall," and not really a crime. Over time people came to realize that stalking was not only dangerous, but has the potential to accelerate into something else entirely. There are actually different motivations for stalkers, even though overall they do tend to use the same methods. Generally speaking there are three types of stalkers.
Stalkers in class one have the conviction their victim is really communicating with them by secret means.
In many instances, stalkers in the category have a mental illness. Most police officers feel that stalker one is relatively benign and won't go out of their way to hurt their "intended."
Generally speaking they will try to meet them and talk to them.
Although rare, some stalkers in this category have actually attacked their victims. Stalkers in category two are noted for drawing a bead on a buddy or someone they only know in passing. A stalker in this classification is usually one who has been turned down for a romantic involvement. A stalker in the category will go out of their way to try and make up reasons and situations to try and win the favor of the person they are interested in.
The odd thing about stalkers in this class is that they think the person they want really wants them as well but just doesn't let them know.
The most famous example of a stalker that fits perfectly into this category is the stalker that has dogged Canadian singer Anne Murray for decades. Most stalkers in this class have been diagnosed with something called erotomania. Stalkers that fall into class three are considered to be dangerous and are usually abusive people who want another person in their relationship to return to them. The stalkers in this class feel that they own a person who left them. Stalkers in this class have been known to kill their victims.
