Where ever you draw the line on friendship and relationship is all based on your perception of things. Spouses are known to stray when they feel like they are not receiving as much as they are giving. Spouses normally look for others that will fill their sexual desires, provide them emotional support, and show them spontaneity. An affair can be broken into two separate categories, a physical affair as well as an emotional affair.
A physical affair that ends with sex is definitely grounds for cheating on your spouse. Anything that includes caressing, kissing, or providing any kind of sexual encounter to someone else then your spouse is considered a physical affair.
An emotional affair can also happen in which no touching has occurred but interestingly enough men and women have differing views about whether this can be considered cheating. Women become upset when their partner makes an emotional connection with someone even if sex is not involved whereas men tend to be more concerned about sex, though by no means does this apply to all women or men.
If you consider online chatter an affair, you are more then obliged to. Depending on what your spouse involves themselves to do while online can be seen as a form of cheating. If your spouse is consistently chatting it up with someone they call a friend, this could be seen as cheating as well.
In every relationship you will reach a lull and the relationship becomes stale. As anyone in a long term, happy situation will reveal you have to work at it. Just because you are together does not mean you should stop 'dating' your partner. Those spouses that have remained faithful will feel betrayed and while your marriage may stay together there will be some serious trust issues to deal with that may never be fully resolved. The one time when I believe cheating would be okay is if you give your partner the okay with their dream girl/boy. It will probably never happen but they can still keep the hope alive!
